  • Be more patient?

Most of us, right? Believe it or not, you can do all of these things through fishing! Fishing is a great way to teach yourself and your kids a healthy lifestyle. Let’s dig into this more to understand each benefit.

Physical Benefits of Fishing

Exercise

Fishing is considered low-impact cardio considering if you are bass fishing with a boat, you need to unload the boat into the water, start the boat, cast your reel several times, and hopefully catch some fish! Then you need to load the boat back onto the trailer and drive back home or to your motel. These activities engage your shoulders, back, arms, core, and legs.

Some anglers use a kayak which requires more core and arm strength.

If you are pier fishing or fishing from the edge of a river, lake, or pond, you might walk back and forth to your favorite fishing spot from your home, cottage, or rental property.

Increases Vitamin D intake

Even when skies are cloudy, your body can absorb Vitamin D, the vitamin that regulates calcium and keeps your bones and teeth healthy. So while being on a boat without sunscreen or protective clothing is not advised, putting it on between 15-30 minutes after initial sun exposure will allow you to get the D you need.

Healthy Protein

With very few exceptions, fish is low in fat and calories and high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. So if you bake, smoke, or grill your catch and add some cooked or raw vegetables, you will be providing your family and you with a nutritious and delicious meal.

Mental Benefits of Fishing

Reduces Stress

Research has shown that getting out in nature, especially around water, positively affects your mood and instills a sense of calm. In addition, it can let you unplug as many anglers leave their smartphones in a boat compartment or at home.

Fishing has been shown to provide short- and long-term healing for individuals with PTSD.

Increases Mindfulness

When you are putting bait on your hook, helping your child untangle their line, or reeling in a big fish, you are present and can only think about that activity.

Agile Activity

If you want to be alone, fishing is a great sport. However, if you’re going to be with others, you can join a local fishing club or enter one or more tournaments. In other words, fishing can be as social as you’d like it to be!
